Irish mixed martial artist Conor McGregor attempted to highlight his multi-cultural credentials, claiming that he was “half black from the belly button down” during a promotional event alongside US professional boxer Floyd Mayweather in New York City, Thursday. The Irishman’s comments have added to the ongoing controversy surrounding his use of racially-charged remarks ahead of the two boxers’ August 26 showdown.
Reportedly attempting to rein in media criticism for previous racially-provocative comments, including referring to Mayweather as ‘boy’ several times, the UFC lightweight champion McGregor said, “Did they not know I am half black, yeah, I am half black from the belly button down.”
